More About Kansas

Modern Kansas is now an economically thriving state; and one of the locations of the largest aerospace centers around. Boeing, Cessna, Learjet, and Hawker Beechcraft all have large aerospace facilities in Wichita, Kansas, with the largest Kansas employer being Spirit AeroSystems. Another major industry in Kansas is oil, as it ranks 8th in country's oil supply, but as it’s decreasing quickly with the nation's growing demand for natural gas.

Even with its strong economy, the state's sales tax is a relatively low 5.3%, in comparison with New York's 8.125%. With three brackets for income tax between 3.5% and 6.45%, Kansas keeps taxes low, and adds additional local sales taxes to support each county individually rather than taking a larger amount for the entire state. Aside from the brief recession in 2010 following 9/11, the taxes in Kansas continue climb as the economy grows. Collections in 2003 amounted to a whopping $1.63 billion, compared to just $805.3 million just 13 years previous in 1990.

Due to a lower personal income, the 1998 permanent tax reduction greatly increased the state's debt level from $1.16 billion in 1998 to more than double in 2006 at $3.83 billion. While some increase was anticipated due to the state's 10-year Comprehensive Transportation Program starting in 1999, the dramatic increase in debt was not expected. The state was ranked 14th for its tax-supported debt per person as of June, 2004. The rate was 6.4%, or 3.8% above the median of just 2.5% for the other 49 states. While the state does have a requirement to keep cash reserves of 7.5% or more of all expenses, lawmakers chose to override this regulation at an attempt to lower the debt problem.
